Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving for the Current Time

Guess what! It’s still Lent. We’re only in the 5th week of Lent, and already this seems like the longest Lent ever! (Or maybe it is only me?)

During Lent, we take up with renewed effort three traditional practices: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These practices help us to focus less on self and more on loving God and loving God in our neighbor.

In our current Lent, the way we do two of these three practices has changed. We can no longer pray as a parish community (at least not in the same space!) and our almsgiving – that is, our care of the poor – has to take a different form too. We can’t go to work in soup kitchens, or nursing homes, homeless shelters. We still need to do them, though!

Here are some suggestions for each to try out this week.


  1. Pray the Rosary. We’re starting a live-streamed Rosary Monday-Friday at 7 pm on the parish website with our parish seminarian Daniel Scanlan. Here’s the link: https://www.avemariaparish.org/blog/categories/live-rosary

  2. Try out the Stations of the Cross. There are plenty family-friendly versions available, or find your own. Google is amazing here.

3. Learn to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet. Google Divine Mercy chaplet or Divine mercy chaplet in Song to find resource on how to pray this beautiful devotion or pray along with a video on YouTube.


1. Make a card to send to someone who is sick or lonely

2. Call a relative you have not talked to in a long time

3. Donate food, clothing or personal care items to a charity or shelter

4. Pray for those have recently died

5. Pray for those in prison
